Mathematical Reasoning
Number, fractions, measurement and data applied to unfamiliar problems. Learn to choose a strategy, show the working and check the answer.
Taught by Dr Indramohan Singh
NSW · Year 5 entry
Build the reading and reasoning skills for NSW OC placement. Start with understanding. Grow into confident, independent thinking.
The OC pathway
Opportunity classes cater for high-potential and gifted students in Years 5 and 6 at selected NSW public primary schools. Students generally sit the placement test in Year 4 for entry into Year 5.
The current OC test is computer-based and assesses three areas. There is no separate writing test.
What your child will learn
Number, fractions, measurement and data applied to unfamiliar problems. Learn to choose a strategy, show the working and check the answer.
Taught by Dr Indramohan Singh
Understand meaning, infer what a text implies and find evidence for an answer. Build vocabulary in context and read beyond the first impression.
Taught by Mishel D'Sa
Unpack logic, evaluate arguments and solve problems step by step. Separate the information that matters from details that distract.

Maths & Thinking Skills
PhD-qualified educator and EduPrism founder. Makes problem-solving explicit, helping students explain their thinking and approach unfamiliar questions with a clear plan.

Reading & Thinking Skills
Masters in English Literature · Curriculum designer. Over a decade of teaching and 3,000+ students taught. Builds careful reading, interpretation and evidence-based reasoning.
Course outline
A skills-first pathway, not a race through worksheets. The sequence and pace are adapted to your child's diagnostic results and time before the test.
Diagnostic & learning plan
Assess reading, mathematical reasoning and thinking skills. Identify strengths, the gaps to work on and an appropriate preparation pathway.
In practice: Baseline tasks, tutor discussion and a written diagnostic report.
Understanding before speed
Strengthen number fluency, comprehension and the language of reasoning. Tutors model the approach, then practise it with your child.
In practice: Focused problems, reading passages and explained solutions.
Unfamiliar questions
Work through multi-step mathematical problems, reading inference and critical-thinking tasks. Explain why an answer is right, not just which option to choose.
In practice: Mixed question sets, evidence-based answers and individual feedback.
Accuracy & test familiarity
Move into timed sets and computer-based practice. Develop pacing, sensible checking and a calm approach to difficult questions.
In practice: Timed section practice and review of recurring errors.
Readiness & confidence
Revisit weaker areas, review mock-style work and make a manageable final preparation plan. Practise applying strategies independently.
In practice: Targeted revision, readiness feedback and test-day routines.
The EduPrism approach
Space to ask questions, explain an approach and learn alongside peers, with individual tutor feedback.
Tutors look at how your child reaches an answer, then address the misunderstanding behind a mistake.
If your child does not show progress, the next session is free. A commitment to learning, not a guaranteed OC placement.

Start with clarity
Understand your child's strengths, identify the gaps and leave with a recommended starting point for OC preparation. No obligation to continue.
